Cool Air and More

Image
Although we are heading towards winter, lets not forget the folks from Down Under who are gearing up for their summers. I think escape from heat and reality should be more than just Kool Aid and popsicles; it should be funky like the Water Wave Air Conditioner. It features ambient lighting with moods like stars and water, matching sound effects and cool breezy air to lower your temperature. Now thats what soothing summers should be like! Socket Pop for Energy Savings

Image
Unplugging devices is the easiest way to conserve energy and we have seen many attempts in the past to enforce this. However none of them have been this cool and easy as the Eco-socket. Once you are done with using a device, the socket automatically detects lower energy consumption and kinda pops the plug for you! When you need to use it again, simply push in the plug and you are good to go! Energy saved and you didnt even have to do a thing! Eco-socket is a 2011 Liteon Award entry. Hublot La Cle Du Temps Watch Hands-On

Image
Does the key of time hold the key to time? Depends on how you look at it. A few years ago Mathias Buttet created a weird watch movement capable of speeding up and slowing down time, and then automatically return the dial to the normal time. Poetically the movement had a lot of value, though practically it had next to none. What it did however do was offer a unique design opportunity to see how one might create a timepiece around this concept. This is the third try. The first watch to use this complex vertical tourbillon based movement was a company called Horus that made a boat style watch out of it called the Ultramarinum . I believe Horus is now defunct. Then Mathias decided to use the movement in one of his own watches for the BNB Confrerie Horlogerie in a watch called the La Clef (with an "f") du Temps . I actually got to play with this incredible odd watch hands-on for myself. Mathias explained to me that it was designed using the look of the movie character Predator...

Annoy Your Friends!

Image
The Catapult Boy ring is unlike any other in that it actually has a secret use that isnt immediately apparent! What looks like a simple ornamental ring is actually a clever device for shooting rubber bands sling-shot style at your friends. Just keep a pack of rubber bands handy and youll be popping everyone all day. The only thing to worry about retaliation! Italian Fast Ferry to be Refit as Worlds 4th Largest Yacht

Image
An unnamed billionaire has just acquired the 146-metre fast ferry Capricorn , built by Fincantieri in 1999 and formerly operated by Tirrenia di Navigazione in Italy, with plans to convert it to the worlds 4th largest private yacht. The multimillion-dollar refit will involve adding six metres to its length for a total of 152 or 499 feet. It will then be considerably larger than the yachts currently owned by King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia, the Emir of Qatar, David Geffen and Paul Allen. Only Roman Abramovichs Eclipse , Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoums Dubai and Sultan Qaboos of Omans Al Said will outrank it. Capricorn was used from 19992011 by Tirrenia di Navigazione to ferry passengers on routes from Naples to places like Sardinia and Sicily. Capable of 30 knots, the Capricorn and its sister vessels proved unpractical or too expensive to operate and were offered for sale. Following the refit the new yacht will be capable of a blistering 40+ knots, making it not only larger but faster ...

UP FOR AUCTION: A Particularly Great Bart Simpson Submariner

Image
I have sung the praises of the Bart Simpson Submariner before , and thought I would share with you a particularly great example coming up for auction next week at Christies in Geneva. This one has everything you want to see. A gorgeous dial with that funky Bart Simpson coronet, beautiful lume with a golden patina to match the gilt printing, a faded bezel insert, and all in what looks to be an unpolished case with original beveled edges. As an added bonus, it comes with a period correct expandable rivet bracelet that was likely originally paired with the watch. This is one fantastic Sub and the winning bidder will no doubt be very pleased. Bart Subs are one of the underappreciated vintage Rolex watches and are at a price comparable to or even less than a new Submariner, but with a lot more character and a lot more upside. SIHH 2012: Cartier Cadran Lov Tourbillon Watch

Image
Heres a first look at the Cartier Cadran Lov Tourbillon watch, a piece that will be officially unveiled in January 2012 at SIHH in Geneva, Switzerland. This piece builds off of previous innovations and design motifs to result in this interesting looking timepiece. The Caliber 9458 powering the Cadran Lov Tourbillon is actually a variant of an already existing tourbillon ( the ladies Alligator Tourbillon from SIHH 2011 ) but the watch itself is decidedly masculine, i.e. with sculpted Roman numerals rather than a pave diamond crocodile. The tourbillon is actually a flying tourbillon, a complicated execution of the tourbillon in which the tourbillon carriage seems to fly on bridges. Cartier further adds to the aesthetic with a stylized Cartier C (see close-up below). Cartier connoisseurs will recognize the Roman Numeral design from to that used on the Santos skeleton watches in prior years ( Cartier Santos Dumont Black Titanium, for example ).
